Submission: Data Sharing and Release Legislative Reforms Discussion Paper

Allens Hub Director Professor Lyria Bennett Moses, Allens Hub Intern Emily Watson, and Allens Hub researchers Genna Churches and Dr Monika Zalnieriute, prepared a submission in response to the Data Sharing and Release Legislative Reforms Discussion Paper.

The submission covered critical issues such as the need for clarity and consistency within this space, and approaches to data sharing which enable research while protecting data from being shared for commercial purposes. It draws attention to the potential complexity created by efforts to develop context-specific laws in areas such as consumer data right, automated vehicle regulation, and data sharing for research purposes, despite the potential merits of each, and notes the parallel operation of these reforms alongside existing provisions further adds complexity to a crowded and inconsistently defined regulatory space.
